Insolvency Practitioners from Baker Tilly International member firms unite
Insolvency Practitioners from Baker Tilly International member firms recently took time out of their hectic schedules to meet at the INSOL International Eighth World Quadrennial Congress 2009 in Vancouver, Canada.
Baker Tilly (UK) is one of the founding members of the International Association of Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Professionals (INSOL International), the leading professional organisation specialising in turnaround and insolvency, with more than 10,000 members from 64 countries worldwide. Since its inception, INSOL has diligently represented the interests of its members and played a leading role in developing internationally accepted legislation and guidelines. Baker Tilly (UK) is also one of the Group of 36 firms (G36) formed as the principal sponsorship vehicle to achieve the goals of INSOL.
The Congress is the premier global event for restructuring and insolvency practitioners, lawyers, bankers and the judiciary. It is a forum in which to exchange information about the newest issues in restructuring and insolvency and provides invaluable opportunities for networking with fellow professionals. The academic aspect, including speeches, presentations and break-out sessions, was thought-provoking and informative. Subjects included: fraudulent preference payment laws; identifying and resolving conflicts between and within different creditor constituencies; the use (and abuse) of confidential information in restructuring discussions; director and officer liability across the world, uncovering fraud and tracing assets; and hedge fund insolvencies, such as those invested in Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC. Discussions generally dealt with the positions within various jurisdictions around the world, as well as the issues and experiences of delegates with cross-border appointments.
Baker Tilly International member firms from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Canada, the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas were represented. The delegates (pictured below) seized the occasion to discuss local and cross-border issues and opportunities, as well as work referral and collaboration. Wolrige Mahon, a Baker Tilly International member firm in Canada, hosted an intimate client dinner with prominent lawyers from each of these jurisdictions in the magnificent setting of Stanley Park.
